Abstract

  The increased importance on sustainability implies among others a large focus on development of the basis and tools for exploitation of contributions from rational application of reliability-based design and calibration of partial factors for civil engineering and renewable energy structures.  Offshore wind turbines are an example as a main contributor to renewable energy in more and more parts of the world.  Reliability is a key issue since costs to materials and operation & maintenance are significant contributors to the Levelized Cost Of Energy and these costs are highly dependent on the reliability of the components implying that it is important to focus on increasing the reliability as much as is economically reasonable.   The same aspects are important for civil engineering structures composed by structural systems such as offshore structures, buildings and bridges, but with different weights on the cost contributors and further life safety aspects are important.

   This paper describes some basic formulations, tools and examples for probabilistic design of wind turbines including the implementation in a new Technical Specification for probabilistic design of wind turbines, IEC TS 61400-9. The Eurocodes for design and assessment of buildings, bridges, towers, masts, … are currently being revised. This paper presents the reliability background for the basic load combinations and examples of reliability-based calibration of partial safety factors.

Speaker Bio

Dr. John Dalsgaard Sørensen is a professor at the Department of The Built Environment at Aalborg University, Denmark. He received his MSC. and Ph.D. in 1980 and 1984, respectively, from Aalborg University, and became a full professor there since 2006. Prof. Sørensen’s major research interests include structural reliability; risk analysis; structural dynamics; structural analysis; load modeling; offshore structures and wind energy. He has more than 400 publications. Now he serves as the member of Editorial Board of numerous international journals and is among others convenor of IEC 61400-1 (Wind turbines – design requirements), IEC 61400-6 (Towers and foundations), and IEC 61400-9 (Probabilistic design measures of wind turbines). 2011-2016 he was President of the Joint Committee of Structural Safety (JCSS). Since 2009 he has been member of TC250-SC10 (Eurocode EN1990 - Basis of structural and geotechnical design) and since 2019 member of the Ad-Hoc Group on Reliability background of the Eurocodes.
