Abstract

This presentation delves into an optimisation-based strategy applied to enhance the performance of energy harvesters at a device level. The primary inquiry tackled by the optimisation algorithm revolves around the potential energy extraction from a given device volume, considering its chosen topology. Employing a global multidimensional constrained optimisation algorithm, factors such as the device’s physical size, geometrical and electrical properties, and nuances of the power management circuit are accounted for to bolster the device’s efficiency. Introducing two novel devices with specific topologies, the talk explores the intricacies of triboelectric and piezoelectric transduction mechanisms, with a detailed focus on the former. Additionally, it delves into performance evaluations under deterministic and stochastic loads, demonstrating the algorithm’s capability to significantly amplify power output, sometimes reaching several Watts.

Speaker Bio

Dr Yurchenko is an expert in the area of Nonlinear Stochastic Dynamics and Control, Vibration mitigation, and mathematical and experimental modelling of complex dynamic systems with application in energy harvesting. He obtained a PhD degree in Mechanical Engineering from Worcester Polytechnic Institute, USA on the development of stochastic optimal control theory for dynamic multi-degree-of-freedom systems and systems subjected to impact loading. He received Dr of Science degree (habilitation) in 2007 and became a full Professor of the Department of Mathematical Sciences, St. Peterburg State Polytechnic University. In 2008 he received a Young Scientists Award from the Russian President Science Council. Dr Yurchenko has published over 150 scientific publications including peer-reviewed journals and conference proceedings, and delivered Keynote lectures, including recent lectures at Vibration Energy Harvesting 2023, China; DYCAELS 2023, Brazil; Perspectives in Nonlinear Dynamics (PNLD23) 2023, India. He is an Editorial board member of Mechanical Systems and Signal Processing, Int. J. of Dynamics and Control, Vibrations, Energies. Dr. Yurchenko has led several industrial projects in the area of experimental dynamics and served as an international expert on government-supported projects in Russia and China. Currently is an awardee of EPSRC and the Royal Society grants, including a recent £1.4M EPSRC grant for establishing a Centre for Doctoral Training in Sustainable Sound Future.
