Abstract

Structural robustness has become an important research topic in the engineering community. Several structural collapses in the past decades increased the public awareness and stressed the importance to consider progressive collapse and structural robustness during the design in relation to human safety and economic considerations. When in a concrete structure a member is lost due to a foreseen or unforeseen accidental event, compressive and tensile membrane action in beams and slabs can be activated and can considerably increase the load carrying capacity of the structural system. The alternate load path created in such a way can often prevent a progressive collapse and hence increase the robustness of concrete structures. In this lecture, an overview is given of the research that has been executed within the research group of the speaker over the last decade. Among others, a unique set of experimental large-scale investigations on one-way reinforced concrete slabs as well as prestressed hollow core slabs has been executed, focusing on the quantification of compressive and tensile membrane action. These results served as validation for the development of advanced numerical modelling of the investigated phenomena and enabled to perform parameter studies, probabilistic simulations, and the quantification of structural reliability and robustness. Furthermore, also the effect of restraint conditions, dynamic effects, FRP strengthening, reinforcement corrosion and fire conditions on membrane action in concrete beams and slabs has been investigated. In this lecture an overview of the most important findings will be provided.

Speaker Bio

Robby Caspeele is professor in the field of Structural Reliability at Ghent University (UGent) since 2013 and one of the technical directors of the Magnel-Vandepitte Laboratory for Structural Engineering and Building Materials. He received his MSc degree in Civil Engineering in 2006 and his PhD in Civil Engineering in 2010. His main areas of expertise relate to full-probabilistic and semi-probabilistic structural reliability analysis and risk management of structures, structural robustness, analysis of concrete and steel structures, assessment of existing structures, production and conformity control, numerical simulation techniques and large-scale testing. He is author of more than 75 publications in peer-reviewed journals and over 200 papers in international scientific conference proceedings. He is also strongly involved in international committees and working groups related to the development of technical guidelines and standards. Among others, he is a board member of the Joint Committee on Structural Safety, co-convenor of fib Commission 3 on existing structures and chair of the Belgian mirror committee for the Eurocodes.
