Tornado wind hazard occurrence and wind speed mapping for Canadian sites and equivalent tornado design wind profile

报告摘要

Abstract

We discuss the development of a preferred prediction model for the spatially varying tornado occurrence rate in Canada. The development considers the underreporting due to low population density and It incorporates the annual average cloud-to-ground lightning flash (ACGLF) density and annual average thunderstorm days (ATD) as covariates in the prediction model. The obtained results indicate that the negative binomial model could be preferred. Since the tornado occurrence rate cannot be directly used in evaluating the tornado wind hazard, we also present results of a systematic assessment of tornado wind velocity hazard at Canadian sites by adopting a probabilistic tornado wind field model.  The obtained hazards are presented in terms of wind speed at a height z meters above the ground surface and return period T, VT(z), for z = 10 m.  Also, a simple equivalent tornado design wind profile is proposed based on VT(z). The proposed design wind profile only depends on VT(10), which greatly facilitates its potential use for structural design subjected to tornado wind load for vertically line-like structures. Rather than considering a structure with a point footprint, the tornado wind velocity hazard assessment for a structure or infrastructure system whose footprint is represented by a line, or an area is also carried out.  It is indicated that the tornado winds could dominate the wind hazard as compared to the synoptic wind hazard if the length of the footprint of an infrastructure system or the area of the footprint of a structure increases.  This indicates that the consideration of tornado winds could be necessary for a spatially extended building complex and infrastructure system that are critical for the safe operation of society.

Speaker Bio

洪汉平(Hong, Hanping),教授,哈尔滨工业大学(深圳)土木与环境工程学院。洪教授在墨西哥国立自治大学获得工学学士、硕士以及博士学位。哈尔滨工业大学(深圳)土木与环境工程学院教授,西安大略大学(UWO)土木与环境工程系兼职教授,荣休教授。在1996年加入UWO前,洪教授在石油和天然气领域工作6年,研究腐蚀下石油和天然气管道的维修优化策略。洪教授的研究重点包括概率分析在土木工程的应用、可靠性和风险评估、台风地震灾害建模和设计规范校准等领域,在基于可靠性和经济高效性的结构设计规范开发和基础设施改造方面做出突出贡献。同时还参与多个结构设计规范和标准委员会。其中包括加拿大国家建筑规范(结构设计常务委员会)和加拿大公路桥梁设计规范。洪教授撰写或合作撰写了230多篇同行评审的期刊论文,因在研究方面突出贡献而获得了若干奖项。洪教授是加拿大土木工程学会院士、墨西哥工程院外籍院士和加拿大工程院院士。
