Abstract

Japan is one of the most earthquake-prone countries in the world and has experienced many earthquake disasters. In this seminar, we will present lessons learned from these earthquake disasters in Japan for earthquake disaster mitigation.

In Japan, the seismic code was revised in 1980, and the revised code has been in effect since 1981. The standards, which previously required that structures not be damaged by medium earthquakes, now require that structures not collapse even by a major earthquake. This approach to standards has now been adopted by almost countries and is common worldwide. In Japan, the seismic codes revised in 1980 are still in effect today, albeit with some partial revisions.

The first test of the revised standards was the 1995 Kobe Earthquake. Approximately 6,000 people died as a result of collapsed buildings. Several major earthquakes followed, the most devastating of which was the 2011 Tohoku earthquake, which killed approximately 20,000 people.

This seminar will introduce the characteristics of building damage caused by such major earthquakes and countermeasures based on the results of these analyses. This seminar aims to provide some hints for considering the future of seismic standards, seismic countermeasures for buildings, and earthquake disaster prevention in cities.
