Abstract

It has become clear that long-period ground motions occur in the alluvial plains following large plate boundary earthquakes. This problem of long-period earthquake ground motions became apparent in Japan with the 2003 Tokachi-oki earthquake. Sloshing occurred in oil tanks about 250 km from the epicenter, causing the floating roof of the oil tank to sink. It caused a fire two days later. Since then, researchers have been intensively studying methods for predicting long-period earthquake ground motions and their effects on structures. And in the 2011 Tohoku earthquake, seismic observation records of super high-rise buildings caused by such long-period earthquake ground motions were also obtained.

In this seminar, we will introduce a method of creating design ground motions that simulate long-period earthquake ground motions studied in Japan, as well as structural experiments that examine their effects on structures and countermeasures based on the results of these experiments.

Long-period earthquake ground motions seriously affect high-rise buildings and seismically isolated buildings with long natural periods on alluvial plains. It is not a problem unique to Japan but one common worldwide. This seminar aims to provide one solution to the long-period earthquake ground motion problem.
