报告摘要

Abstract

Materials are inherently network-based systems, whose physical properties are defined by the structure of the chemical bonds that connect their atoms or molecules. At the engineering scale, collagen and cellulose-based materials are typical examples where the overall emergent mechanical response is the result of the nonlinear interplay between their constituent fibers, their progressive debonding and failure. The understanding of the behaviour of those materials may lead to innovative non-periodic network materials inspired by their unique morphological features.

In this seminar, a novel statistical micromechanical model resembling a fiber-bundle model used in physics (pure cross-sectional) but incorporating the fiber cross-linking effects (fiber longitudinal information) is proposed to predict the uniaxial stress-strain response of a random cross linked network material. Then, to tackle biaxial stress states, two nonlinear anisotropic elastic continua are proposed, and for the very first time a corelation between them and the statistical approach is established, enabling their concurrent use at the macro- and at the micro-scales. Several examples on in-situ testing of paper materials are provided to validate the theory.

Speaker

BioProf. Marco Paggi is a Full Professor of Structural Mechanics at the IMT School for Advanced Studies Lucca, Italy. He serves as the Deputy Rector and directs both the Multi-scale Analysis of Materials (MUSAM) research unit and the MUSAM-Lab.

He received his PhD in Structural Mechanics from the Politecnico di Torino, Italy, in 2005. In 2010, he was awarded an Alexander von Humboldt Research Fellowship at Leibniz Universität Hannover, Germany. He has held visiting positions at several prestigious institutions, including Université Paris-Est (France), the University of Girona (Spain), and the Indian Institute of Technology Delhi (India). Prior to his current appointment, he was a professor at the Politecnico di Torino, the University of Pisa, and the University of Trento.

His research focuses on contact mechanics, fracture mechanics, and multiphysics simulations, with applications to a wide range of structural and material systems. Professor Paggi is the author of over 250 peer-reviewed publications and has been the Principal Investigator of numerous EU-funded projects, including two prestigious grants from the European Research Council (ERC).
