报告摘要
Abstract
This seminar will present an overview of achievements since 2017 at the IMT School for Advanced Studies Lucca in the failure analysis of composite materials and structures. Our research is based on a novel variational approach that synergistically combines the phase-field method to simulate fracture in the bulk material with the cohesive zone model to predict decohesion at interfaces. This framework uniquely captures the complex interplay between these two failure mechanisms. Developed through extensive international collaborations with researchers from the University of Seville and the University of Girona (Spain), the presented results and applications include: (i) solving the fundamental problem of a crack impinging on an interface; (ii) analyzing the competition between interlaminar and translaminar crack propagation in laminates; and (iii) investigating structural failures in long fiber-reinforced composites, focusing on the interplay between fiber-matrix decohesion and matrix fracture.

Speaker Bio

Prof. Marco Paggi is a Full Professor of Structural Mechanics at the IMT School for Advanced Studies Lucca, Italy. He serves as the Deputy Rector and directs both the Multi-scale Analysis of Materials (MUSAM) research unit and the MUSAM-Lab. He received his PhD in Structural Mechanics from the Politecnico di Torino, Italy, in 2005. In 2010, he was awarded an Alexander von Humboldt Research Fellowship at Leibniz Universität Hannover, Germany. He has held visiting positions at several prestigious institutions, including Université Paris-Est (France), the University of Girona (Spain), and the Indian Institute of Technology Delhi (India). Prior to his current appointment, he was a professor at the Politecnico di Torino, the University of Pisa, and the University of Trento. His research focuses on contact mechanics, fracture mechanics, and multiphysics simulations, with applications to a wide range of structural and material systems. Professor Paggi is the author of over 250 peer-reviewed publications and has been the Principal Investigator of numerous EU-funded projects, including two prestigious grants from the European Research Council (ERC).
