Abstract

Moisture damage in asphalt mixtures is one of the main causes of early degradation in flexible pavements, leading to significant maintenance costs in road infrastructure projects. Understanding and characterizing this problem is challenging due to the variety and interaction of the mechanisms involved. This seminar will present key fundamentals of moisture-induced damage in asphalt mixtures, along with recent developments in methods and approaches used to characterize this phenomenon.

Speaker Bio

Prof. Silvia Caro is a full professor in the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering at Universidad de los Andes in Bogotá, Colombia, where she also serves as Vice President for Academic Affairs. Prof. Caro specializes in the advanced characterization and multiscale modeling of highway materials and pavement structures, with an emphasis on bituminous materials. Her research focuses on micromechanics characterization, environmental–mechanical coupling, and the design of next-generation sustainable bituminous materials, including self-healing systems and bio-binders for recycled mixtures. She has served as vice president and president of the Academy of Pavement Science and Engineering (APSE), chair of the Materials Section of the Transportation Research Board (TRB), where she oversaw nine technical committees, and chair of the TRB AKM40 “Asphalt Mixture Evaluation and Performance” committee, among other roles in international organizations. She is an Associate Editor for Road Materials and Pavement Design and the ASCE Journal of Materials in Civil Engineering, and serves on the editorial boards of the International Journal of Pavement Engineering and Construction and Building Materials. Prof. Caro has led multiple national and international projects on road materials and has authored more than 70 journal papers and over 90 conference presentations.
